1. Read Aloud Story Connection: Read Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst (or watch this read-aloud video). In the story, Alexander is upset because so many things go wrong, and he thinks he would be happier somewhere else. We all have days like that! This was my favorite book when I was a little kid. Paul reminds us in 1 Timothy that learning to be thankful for what we have and trusting God to care for us is what really matters.
2. Contentment Collage: Take a piece of paper and draw or cut out pictures of things that make you happy—like playing outside, a pet, your family, a favorite meal, or a special friend. Put them all together into a collage. This shows us that even small things are gifts from God that bring joy.
3. True Treasure Hunt: Hide slips of paper around the room. Most slips have things that don’t last, like “candy,” “new shoes,” or “video games.” A few slips say treasures that do last, like faith, hope, love, kindness. Let everyone hunt for the slips, then sort them into “treasures that fade away” and “treasures that last forever.” Cheer when you find the treasures that last—those are the ones Paul says matter most!
4. Journal, considering the following:
- What does it mean to be satisfied with what we have? How do we do that?
- I wonder what kind of treasures you think last forever.
I wonder how we can remember what matters most when we really want more things
