Seen Around Church: Week of February 8, 2026
February 11, 2026By Associate Pastor of Youth and Missions/Outreach Rev. Lindsey Odom
This past week, we were blessed to host a Room in the Inn ministry evening at Sardis Presbyterian. This ministry reminds us how simple acts of service can reflect God’s abundant love in powerful ways.
Our congregation truly showed up. Many of you donated clothes, sweaters, jackets, knitted hats and scarves, shoes, and so much more. These items were not just items placed on tables; rather, they became signs of care, compassion, love, and service to all. Our neighbors were invited to shop for what they needed, choosing items for themselves and their children and/or families. One moment that especially touched my heart was when a donated pair of sneakers brought instant smiles and heartfelt thanks. The recipient shared that she could not be more grateful to have another pair of shoes. It was amazing to witness not only the clothing being received, but also the joy, appreciation, and renewed hope that accompanied it.
We also give thanks for Clara, one of our SMPC youth, who came to Sardis Presbyterian to support our Room In The Inn ministry. Her willingness to show up and serve helped us extend Christ’s hospitality, love, and care to our neighbors in need in a tangible way. It was especially meaningful to have a youth presence that evening, as we welcomed many children. Clara and her mom, SMPC Director of Spiritual Formation Rebecca Guzman, gracefully spent time after dinner sitting with the kids, coloring, laughing, and sharing moments of fellowship. Their presence created a space of warmth and belonging that went far beyond the meal itself.
There were so many other special moments that made the night memorable. Leslie Harper rejoined Ruby Robinson as the dynamic duo who may very well be the most efficient laundry team we have ever seen! With their wonderfully organized system and cheerful teamwork, it was a joy to have them back together after Leslie had to miss the last hosting date due to work travel.
Amy Zagora once again shared her famous banana pudding, which quickly became a highlight of the evening. One of our neighbors couldn’t stop talking about how delicious it was and how amazing of a cook she must be—proof that hospitality is often tasted as much as it is felt.
Before dinner, Michael Matthews led us in prayer, grounding the evening in gratitude and grace. His words were heartfelt and genuine, helping set the tone for a night centered on welcome, respect, community, and love
We were also grateful for another strong youth presence. Emily Jaquith and her mom, Adrienne Jaquith, served together during the overnight shift, offering care and companionship through the night if needed. In the morning, MK Zagora and Pastor’s wife Belinda Hull stepped in for the early shift, helping to ensure a smooth and caring transition into the day. This time around, many members of our church staff were actively involved, and it was deeply meaningful to witness such shared commitment and involvement. It truly was a labor of love.
We were also thankful for Tim Maguire and his daughter, Lilah Maguire, who faithfully helped with dinner, setting up beds, and cleaning up so that the evening ran as smoothly as possible. They are such a sweet father and daughter duo, serving side by side with care, compassion, and joy.
Room In The Inn is more than a program. It is a ministry where relationships are formed, stories are shared, and Christ’s love is made visible through hospitality, service, and community. Each time we host, we are reminded that this ministry is not only valuable and needed, but transformative for everyone involved.
I invite you to consider becoming part of this meaningful work. Whether through donations, volunteering, or simply showing up with an open and willing spirit, there is a place for everyone to help extend this ministry and serve! With gratitude for the many ways you all continue to be the hands and feet of Christ by loving God and loving others!
