Luke 14: 25-33
- Story Connection: Listen to a readaloud of The Quiltmaker’s Gift by Jeff Brumbeau. In this story, a greedy king keeps wanting more and more things, but he never finds happiness until he learns about giving. Think about how the king is like the people Jesus was speaking to in Luke 14. Sometimes our “things” can get in the way of our relationship with God.
- Offering Box Activity: Make a simple offering box out of a shoebox or container. Write on it: “God loves a cheerful giver.” Use it during the week to collect coins or bills. You might decide together to give the money for something like school lunches for children in Haiti or to place in the offering plate at church.
- Game: Pass the Gift: Choose a small household item (like a stuffed animal or ball) to be the “gift.” Take turns passing it back and forth quickly while saying something kind as you give it (“I share joy with you,” “I’m glad you’re here,” “God loves you”). Talk about what it might mean to live generously.
- Journal, considering the following:
- I wonder why Jesus told the people to give up their possessions.
- I wonder what makes it hard to share what we have.
- When have you given something away? How did it feel?
