SMPC provides a variety of opportunities for members to be the hands and feet of Christ by serving and nurturing relationships in Charlotte.
The Missions and Outreach Committee has four main focus areas that include:

- Hunger
- Educational Equity
- LGBTQ+ & Racial Justice
We encourage you to get involved and help SMPC serve our community!
C = Opportunity for families with young children to participate together.
G = Impactful and fun service opportunity for existing groups to serve together.
American Red Cross Blood Drives: Save lives by giving blood! We also need volunteers to assist with checking people in during blood drives. We will host a blood drive on the following Saturdays: March 7, May 2, August 8, and November 7. | Sign up. | Volunteer at the blood drive. Contact: Bill Ramsey
Bagged Lunches for Roof Above (C): Each month, we collect and donate 100 bagged lunches to Roof Above, an organization working to end homelessness in our city. This is a great activity to do with children or to gather with friends on a Friday night and make bags together before the Saturday drop-off. | Sign up. | Contact: Julie Durham
Breakfast for Center of Hope (G): Each month, SMPC preps, cooks and serves breakfast for guests at the Salvation Army’s Center of Hope, a local women and children’s shelter. | Sign up. | Contact: Lee Martin
Desserts for Center of Hope (C): One Sunday a month, we deliver desserts for the women and children who temporarily call Center of Hope home. Homemade or store-bought donations are welcome! | Sign up. | Contact: Terry Gaines
Mentor a High School Student through UrbanPromise: UrbanPromise provides Charlotte’s children and youth with the spiritual, academic and social development necessary to become Christian leaders determined to restore their communities. This is a great opportunity to build a relationship with a local high school student on your own time and is incredibly impactful for students. Contact: Rev. Lindsey Odom
Provide Dinner at Time Out Youth (C): Grab a few friends and provide a meal at Time Out Youth, an organization dedicated to creating affirming, supportive spaces for LGBTQ+ youth in our community. Volunteers are encouraged to stay and fellowship during the community dinner. Sign-ups are available throughout the year. Contact: Rev. Lindsey Odom
Room in the Inn (C): Room in the Inn provides a safe, warm spot for our unhoused neighbors to sleep and receive three warm meals during the winter months. Volunteers will help with dinner, overnight stays or breakfast and cleanup at Sardis Presbyterian Church on Sunday, February 15 and Sunday, March 1. | Sign up. | Contact: Amy Matthews
Shelter Ministry: Meets at the church on the second Thursday of every month at 9:30 a.m. to fill empty medicine bottles with body wash for Roof Above.
Tutor at Smithfield or Sterling Elementary: If you are flexible during a weekday, tutoring can make a huge impact on Elementary school kiddos! Tutor for one hour a week with Heart Math or Augustine Literacy Project.
Deliver Bread to Dilworth Soup Kitchen: We receive bread from Panera and deliver it every Friday morning to the Dilworth Soup Kitchen.
Intergenerational Service Projects (C): Join one of our church-wide service projects. 2026 events will include a donation drive/service event to support Time Out Youth in February, Easter meal kits in April, back-to-school backpacks for Smithfield Elementary in August, and Thanksgiving Meal kits in November.
Seasonal Service Opportunities: Participate in seasonal service opportunities including the food drive for Nourish Up in the Fall, ringing the bell for the Salvation Army, and participating in the Angel Tree and Alternative Gift Market in December.
Bag Lunches for Roof Above
SMPC is committed to providing 100 bag lunches a month to help feed our unsheltered neighbors at Roof Above. Contact: Julie Durham
Center of Hope
The Salvation Army Center of Hope provides emergency housing to women and children in need. We serve those who temporarily call Center of Hope home in a variety of ways from making Welcome Home Baskets to serving breakfast and providing desserts.
CROP Hunger Walk
Sponsor a walker or join us as we walk to fight hunger every October. Contact: Lindsey Odom
Nourish Up
We support Nourish Up (formerly known as Loaves and Fishes) with several food drives per year and sort and distribute food at the pantry. Nourish Up is working to end food insecurity in our community.
Room in the Inn
We partner with two other churches to help with dinner, overnight stays, breakfast, and cleanup. Room in the Inn is an initiative led by Roof Above. Upcoming dates to serve in 2026 are January 7, February 15 and March 1. Contact: Amy Matthews
