SMPC Preschool Welcomes New Director

South Mecklenburg Presbyterian Church Preschool (SMPC Preschool) is pleased to announce the appointment of Tammy Winchip as its new preschool director. Tammy will replace Carol Watkins, who recently announced her retirement as preschool director.

“Tammy brings a wealth of experience and passion for guiding children on a path of love, kindness, and discovery during their crucial early years,” said Laura Schelhammer, chair of the preschool director search committee and South Mecklenburg Presbyterian Church member. “We look forward to continuing to provide a warm and nurturing environment for our preschoolers under her leadership.”

Tammy’s educational background includes a bachelor’s degree in childcare administration from Montreat College, a master’s degree in Christian education from Presbyterian School of Christian Education, and a doctorate in educational ministry from Columbia Seminary. Her extensive experience encompasses various roles such as director of Christian education, children’s ministry director, TK-1st grade teacher, worship leader and curriculum coordinator.

Tammy grew up in Baltimore, MD and has lived up and down the east coast with school and work. She and her husband, Joel, moved to Charlotte seven years ago from York, SC and became members of SMPC in April 2022.

“I believe in helping children build a strong foundational of understanding of themselves as not simply a child, but a child of God,” said Tammy. “I am thrilled to be a part of this SMPC Preschool community and look forward to meeting our preschool families this fall.”

In her free time Tammy enjoys crafting – painting, scrapbooking, jewelry – she will try just about any craft! She also loves to explore new restaurants, stream movies or see the latest movie in the theater, and walk along the many greenways in town with her husband.
