June 4, 2026Nourish Up: Lifting Our Community Through Food
By Terry Gaines
A team of 20 SMPC volunteers packed 702 boxes with shelf-stable foods at Nourish Up’s Hunger Hub on Saturday, May 30. Each week, Nourish Up volunteer drivers deliver 2,340 boxes of food throughout Charlotte to our neighbors experiencing food insecurity.
“I know that hunger is a very real issue in Charlotte, and I feel called to serve more at this point in my life,” said SMPC member Lorri Hattenhauer and first-time Nourish Up volunteer. “I was super impressed with the facility, and they were so organized and prepared for us. The two-hour shift felt like 20 minutes.” Lorri said she experienced genuine fellowship while serving alongside SMPC friends and left feeling uplifted.
Nourish Up serves the Charlotte area through 41 pantries including at St. Giles Presbyterian Church where several SMPC members volunteer on Fridays, If you’d like to know more, contact Jane Royther.
Looking for other ways to serve this summer? Nourish Up’s greatest volunteer need is for home food delivery and Meals on Wheels delivery drivers. These volunteers bring food, care, connection and consistency to neighbors who may not otherwise have access. To learn more contact Leisa Lackey or visit nourishup.org/volunteer.

Community Organization Hosts Spring Recital at SMPC
Piedmont Music Therapy hosted their spring recital in Mecklenburg Hall in early May and sent over some cute pictures!
“Thank you again for allowing us to use Mecklenburg Hall,” said Gretchen Benner, Piedmont Music Therapy. “It’s really helpful having such an accessible space for wheelchair users and for performers’ friends/family to enjoy celebrating the occasion.”
We are blessed to be able to share our space with the community!
