December 18, 2024Jesus told his disciples, “Your sorrow shall be turned into joy.” John 16:20
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.” Ephesians 6:10

As a child, there was never a Christmas without a new book for my sister and me under our tree, and so, we gradually grew to become avid readers. Many of us lose ourselves in reading. Books help to heal, lift spirits, reduce stress, enhance our brains, and help us better understand our world.
Recently, I finished a wonderful and inspirational story entitled, Theo of Golden, by a Georgia author, Allen Levi*. I often had to stop reading to spend moments pondering Levi’s words. At one point I snapped a picture of a page with a quote spoken by the main character, Theo. He says, “Living with sadness, accepting it, is easier than trying to pretend it isn’t there. It is another of life’s great mysteries that sadness and joy can coexist so compatibly with one another. In fact, I wonder if, on this side of heaven, either one can exist without the other.”
While we have all experienced sadness in our lives, during the Christmas season it can be even more difficult for some individuals to “merrily” navigate through their days. But, if I am feeling pain or disappointment, I find strength through my faith, for I know that the Lord is more powerful than my worries and fears. As you travel through your own highs and lows this Advent season, may your faith continue to guide you to find refuge and joy in your life.

Heavenly Father, during this Advent time, we ask that you give us peace in our mind, body, soul and spirit. Heal and remove what may cause us stress, grief, and sorrow in our lives. Please help us to accept our sadness, guiding us onto a path of life that brings us joy. Amen
