February 28, 2024SMPC Serves Up An ‘Egg-cellent’ Morning at Center of Hope
The February Center of Hope Breakfast was a huge success! Thank you to servers Curt Ireland, Toby and Gary Sunstrom, Donna and Bill Ramsey, Donna Podgorny, Bob Williamson, Ruby Robinson and all who donated breakfast food via the SignUpGenius and our Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper!
Center of Hope residents were especially excited about the happy messages and cards created by our members at the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper, said Donna Podgorny.
“A few people asked if they could take the messages to their rooms, to which we replied, ‘of course!'” said Donna. “It was really a good Saturday morning and perhaps all these messages brightened everybody’s spirit because there were lots of happy conversations.”
If you would like to donate food or money to next month’s breakfast or would like to serve on Saturday, March 16, sign up below.
Cheers to Fellowship and Fun
Over 30 SMPC members and friends joined together at Open Tap on Carmel Road for the Hops and Vine Around Town fellowship on Saturday, February 17. Let’s just say it was hoppin’…(we couldn’t help ourselves!).
Children Learn Forgiveness During Children’s Worship
In children’s worship on Sunday, children talked about God’s amazing capacity for forgiveness. To illustrate God’s forgiveness, the children wrote down things they were sorry for on dissolving paper and then placed them in the baptismal bowl. As they dissolved, they said to one another, “You are forgiven.”
We KNOW the Best Place to Be on Sunday Mornings
Our Lenten theme this year is “Seven Last Words,” which refers to the seven phrases that Jesus uttered on the cross. This past Sunday, we studied and prayed the word “Know.” We acknowledge that without Christ, we know nothing, but we also understand a morning at SMPC among our church family is the best place to be.
Reminder: If you haven’t picked up a Lenten devotional, you can pick one up in the Connections Center in the narthex or email Rebecca Guzman for a copy. We are not able to provide them digitally on our website due to copyrights.
BAM! Children ‘Link and Learn’ to Make Time for God Everyday
Children in BAM! (Bible and Music) made “Countdown to Easter” paper chains on Sunday, February 18 (the gold links represent Sundays). Removing a link each day is meant to help children remember to make time for God in their day. A big shoutout to BAM! dads Jon Myers and Steven Ritchie who helped construct Lenten chains for 24 kids – that’s no small feat, trust us!
S’more Than Enough Love to Go Around at SMPC Youth
Our SMPC youth enjoyed kickball and S’mores at the fire pit last Sunday night! Thank you to our amazing Associate Pastor of Youth and Missions/Outreach to continue to keep our middle and high schoolers engaged every week.
Two SMPC College Students and Their Families Celebrate Student Sunday
An SMPC member and SMPC friend, UNC-Chapel Hill students Courtney Parrish and Ava Perry, meet every Thursday for dinner and study through the Presbyterian Campus Ministry (PCM) at University Presbyterian Church in Chapel Hill. This past Sunday, the two young women invited their families for “PCM Sunday.” The worship service was led solely by UNC-Chapel Hill students and was followed by a delicious barbecue lunch. We are so grateful for the friendships that are formed through SMPC connections that continue to blossom even when they are away from home!
With Beautiful New Outdoor Tables, SMPC Ready for Warmer Temps
Over the weekend, BSA Troop 119 Eddie House rebuilt the picnic benches and re-landscaped behind Mecklenburg Hall as part of his Eagle Scout project. We are incredibly thankful for the hard work of Eddie, his troops and his friends. We can’t wait for summer picnics!
