SMPC Celebrates World Communion Sunday
We celebrated World Communion Sunday as a church family on October 1! World Communion Sunday allows us to celebrate our oneness in Christ with all of our Christian brothers and sisters around the world as we come to God’s table to be fed, nourished and sent out to do God’s work in the world.
After worship, our Confirmation class participated in stations to learn more about the Sacrament of Communion and what makes World Communion Sunday so significant!
Believing and Belonging Participants Learn More about Presbyterian Faith
Over 25 people joined the Believing and Belonging class after worship on Sunday, October 1. The class, created by Director of Spiritual Formation Rebecca Guzman and Director of Hospitality and Connection Nancy Metzler, is a way for those interested in joining SMPC to learn more about what it means to be Presbyterian and to understand how God might use their gifts within the church community. The group also enjoyed lunch and fellowship. We are so grateful to all who joined us and are especially thankful for the awesome questions and willingness to learn! If you missed the class and would like to know more about our faith and church, please contact Nancy Metzler.
Youth Choir Hits High Notes (and Records!)
Our Youth Choir (now called Jubilate Choir) met for rehearsals Sunday afternoon. We look forward to hearing their beautiful voices in worship this Sunday. The Jubilate Choir is currently 40 members strong, a record roster, according to Zach Bowyer, director of music and organist.
BYG Enjoys a BIG Sunday
Over 45 middle and high schoolers spent Sunday evening stapling the bag tags onto the bags for the SMPC Food Drive for Loaves and Fishes! The teens also spent time at prayer stations and in small groups. Thank you to our youth for their time, energy and love for one another and our community! And, thank you to Associate Pastor of Youth and Missions/Outreach Lindsey Odom and our incredible adult volunteers for providing opportunities for our youth to grow in their faith! Church Members Visit Civil Rights Museum in Greensboro
On Monday, October 2, several SMPC members visited the International Civil Rights Center and Museum, which was built around the original F.W. Woolworth lunch counter in Greensboro, NC where four Black North Carolina A&T students protested the store’s “Whites only” policy. The field trip was part of SMPC’s Racial Equity Engagement initiative.
“Visiting the museum was an enriching experience that left a lasting impression on me,” said Mary Katheryne Zagora, financial administrator and office manager. “The exhibits were incredibly well done and impactful and provided a deep insight into our history and culture. What made the trip even more special was the wonderful conversation we had in the car to and from the museum. I highly recommend this museum to anyone who visits the Greensboro area!”
Charlotte’s Best Enjoy ‘Charlotte’s Best BBQ’
Scout Troops 119 and 219 delivered donated BBQ from the BBQ and veggie chili sale to the South Division of CMPD and the Charlotte Fire Department Station 32 last week. We hope these “heroes among us” feel our love and appreciation for everything they do for our church and community! Thank you to the Scouts for their generous donation!
